Day 11 – Resume Upgrade

Day 11 – Resume Upgrade

Along with another full day of driving nails into my floor, I took some time at lunch to read some more in a recent library acquisition, Surviving a Layoff by Lita Epstein. The book has the actual job search begin on Week 4 of the reader’s layoff, but being the primary breadwinner and having received only two weeks of severance pay, I chose a more accelerated pace.

The section on resumes address several rules of thumb that were in play ten years ago that no longer hold true. I was happy to learn that I don’t necessarily have to show each place of employment. I know that many of the online applications, especially for Federal Jobs, do require a comprehensive career time-line, but Epstein suggests that the resume itself is a “marketing piece” to land an interview. Hey, I’m a designer and a wordsmith; I should be able to trim out some of the ho-hum employment and craft in some more attention grabbing keywords.

Maybe a line or two about my flooring skills…
